IDS at the ADS Midwest Regional Meeting

~ by Sara Kinne

American Daffodil Society's Midwest Region, which encompasses Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and tiny portions of western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, had its annual fall meeting at the Cincinnati Civic Garden Center on October 12, 2013 led by Fredrica Lawlor, the Midwest Regional Director. 45 people attended, bringing a covered dish for the communal luncheon and daffodil bulbs for the bulb swap. New members of ADS as of 2010 were presented with a gift starter pack of six cultivars, all suitable for exhibiting in a daffodil show. The purpose of giving these bulbs was to encourage them to become more active in exhibiting their flowers. Everyone present had numerous trips to the exchange/swap table and chose a named bulb when it was that member's turn. Seasoned members who show annually assisted some of our newer members in selecting something that they might like based on their voiced preferences.

The morning session was presented by Becky Fox Matthews, President of ADS, and was a glorious pictorial slide show of her September 2012 World Daffodil Tour of New Zealand. Becky gave a continuous commentary of the places and people in the photos and instilled a genuine flavor of New Zealand captured by her photos. The afternoon session was a new slide show created by ADS member Kirby Fong and served as a Judge's Refresher Course for those people requiring that credit. Michael Kuduk kept the the appropriate visual on the screen while Linda Wallpe read the accompanying script which sometimes generated active discussion.

Chuck Orton, photographer from Hickory, PA, planned and organized the group photo which was no small feat for a group as large as we had. The best part of this annual event was the socializing and visiting with people we may see only a couple of times a year. Our Regional Director, Fredrica Lawlor, was greatly aware of this important aspect of our gathering together and delayed the formal day's events until 10:30AM.
